Evade Subramanyam
Yevade Subramanyam? - Who is Subramanyam?
Some movies stay with you even when you come out of the theatre, and one such movie for me is Yevade Subramanyam. It is a one of a kind movie with a meaningful message incorporated in it. Directed by Nag Ashwin, the movie makes the youth of today stop just for a second, and ask themselves - who am I, what am I doing currently, what will I do? Granted, technology, science and money have made our lives easy, but there are some things which they can't teach us is - being ethical, honest and helping one in need. For a happy and successful life, the above aspects are inevitable. Money, fame and a luxurious life can be achieved without these anyway, but can happiness be attained is a question that is beautifully answered by this movie, laced with humor.
The story revolves around Subramanyam, fondly known as Subbu, and his friend Rishi. Though sharing a strong friendship bond since childhood, they however don’t share the same personality and mindset. Subramanyam, who came from a middle class family, had his whole life planned out right from when he was in school - pursue engineering, go for MBA and get a high paid job. He strived hard for the same, and believed that any time spent doing things that don’t add value to his goals were a waste of time. He does achieve what he wanted from life. Rishi though, coming from a rich business family, always felt there was something more than just money - he believed in living in the moment. With time, owing to different ideologies, they drift apart. They however meet again when Rishi crashes his engagement party, and fondly tells him his wish to visit Dudh Kosi, a holy lake in the Himalayas. Certain circumstances lead Subbu to meet Anandi, an orphan, from whom he needed to buy shares in order to become the CEO of the company he worked in. However, Rishi’s dream remains untouched as he dies in an accident. Anandi, realizing how ardently Rishi wanted Subbu to be the one to go to Dudh Kosi with him, agrees to give her shares in the company to Subbu only if he comes to that place along with her to scatter Rishi’s ashes in the holy lake.
Their journey to Dudh Kosi, as well as Subbus’ journey to realizing how wrong he was in treating his best friend and his life till now is exquisitely curated and worth watching. The scenic cinematography was breathtaking, giving us major travelling goals. He realizes that life isn’t just about profit or loss, opportunities and threats, but what makes it really worth is spreading love, being ethical, helpful he realizes that life is not all about profit and loss, opportunities and threats but is also about spreading, helping others and being ethical. The trip makes him regret how he treated his best friend all these years. On his return, he quits his current job and wishes to work with Ramaiah, the same elderly person he criticized for not selling his company just because of the trust of the many employees he would have lost, had he sold it. The soundtrack is beautifully composed, adding to the emotions felt while watching the movie. Yevade Subramanyam is one such movie for all those love travel, and above all, for those who need perspective.
